Chapter Nineteen

Rakell willed herself to stay upright as she walked with Dolly to a nearby picnic table. Swinging her legs over the bench seat, she rested her arms on the table with Dolly’s leash wrapped around her wrist. Her legs pulsed with pain, and her head felt void as if she were seconds from passing out.

Rakell’s gaze dropped down to Dolly, whose big brown eyes looked concerned.

“You got a pretty nice owner,” Rakell said. “He’s got a real sweet side.”

She let her head drop, laying the side of her cheek on her arms. She was lost, somewhere between daydreaming and sleep, her head swimming… Are you one of those girls? You like him, don’t you? Well, don’t!

She didn’t feel his hands on her shoulders until his head was next to hers, his lips brushing up against the skin of her cheek. She felt his dry lips lightly kiss her cheek as he whispered, “Sweets, Sweets? You okay? I have OJ, this will help.” He placed a small plastic bottle of orange liquid in front of her, then removed her baseball cap so he could look at her eyes.

“Wow, sorry,” she said, shaking her head as her hair spread across her back, freed from the cap. She looked down at Dolly and smiled lazily, letting herself soak in the feeling of Jake’s hand lightly stroking her hair.

“Jake,” she finally murmured, lifting her head, absorbing his concerned expression.

“Drink some of this juice,” Jake insisted, twisting the top off and handing her the bottle. He’d also bought two coffees and a couple of muffins.

Rakell gulped the cool, sweet liquid like she hadn’t had a drink in days. The sugar quickly brought her back. “God, thank you. I swear, not sure what hit me.”

Jake suspected she hadn’t eaten, and the thought irritated him, but that was washed away when she poured her green eyes on him. “It’s warm, and it was a tough workout. You did great,” he said.

“Please, mate, I fell apart at the end,” she said, finishing the last gulp of juice. She lifted one of her legs over the bench, matching his sitting posture, her knees touching his upper calves.

Jake smiled, studying those big, beautiful eyes, the way she was looking at him. He grabbed one of the coffees and slid it toward her. “Ended up parking across the street, so I figured I’d just run in the shop and grab us a couple of coffees and muffins. I think I remembered right—almond milk, no sugar?”

“Yup, you got it.” Rakell offered him a forced smile, not telling him she’d traded that treat in too, just black coffee for now. Nor did she mention that there was no way she’d be eating that muffin. She’d sip the coffee graciously. Jake taking care of her made her mind flash to last night. Matt holding Jonathon, promising to always be there for him, to take care of him, stand up for him—always, Matt had added. Then he’d looked at Rakell, mouthing Thank you. She’d
